Decatur, Illinois, in 1869 was the seat of Macon County and a growing railroad and grain town on the Sangamon River. Several rail lines met there, and the surrounding prairie fed a steady trade in corn, wheat, and livestock that moved through its elevators and depots. The town had only recently taken a city charter, and its civic life centered on the courthouse square, churches, and the local business houses that served farm families coming in from the countryside. Residents were proud of the Republican state convention held there in 1860, when Abraham Lincoln's supporters gathered in the town, and that memory still shaped how many people viewed Decatur's place in state politics.
