Chenoa, Illinois, in McLean County, was a young railroad town in 1869, having grown up in the late 1850s when the Chicago and Alton Railroad laid its line across the central prairie. Its livelihood rested on the farms that surrounded it, where corn, oats, and hogs were the main products, and the depot gave local growers a way to ship their crops to Chicago and other markets. Like many Illinois towns of its age, Chenoa was still defining its streets, churches, and civic institutions, and its residents measured progress by new buildings along the tracks. A bird's-eye view from this moment shows a community whose fortunes were tied closely to the railroad and to the open fields beyond its edges.
