The Hotel De Soto stood in Savannah, Georgia, a city that drew winter visitors in the early 1900s with its squares, mild climate, and Spanish-named streets. The hotel took its name from Hernando de Soto, the Spanish explorer who traveled through the Southeast in the 1500s. This view comes from a glass negative made around 1900 by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that photographed American towns, resorts, and landmarks to promote railroad travel. Hotels like this one were social centers as well as lodgings, with dining rooms, bars, and lobbies where guests and locals met. The negative's survival through a 1949 gift to the State Historical Society of Colorado shows how these travel views moved between collections.
