Avalon, the harbor town on Santa Catalina Island, drew steamer passengers from Los Angeles in the 1890s, and the Hotel Metropole was one of the resort buildings that welcomed them. This print was made by photochrom, a process that reproduced a photograph in color by printing from several stone or metal plates, and it was then finished by hand. Hotels of this period often had bars and dining rooms that served as social centers for guests, so the building's place on a board of taverns and saloons reflects that role. The hand coloring gives the scene the bright, idealized look that made such views popular as souvenirs.
