A view of the young capital issued in Boston in 1834, this picture looks back to 1800, the year Congress moved from Philadelphia to the unfinished city on the Potomac. That fall the Capitol's north wing was just far enough along for the Senate and House to meet, while the streets were muddy, widely spaced, and thinly built, and John Adams became the first president to live in the Executive Mansion. The print is credited to Samuel Walker of Boston, so it shows how the national capital was pictured for readers in New England a generation after its founding.
