Two facing pages from the Gutenberg Bible open at the start of the Gospel of Luke, shown here as a reproduction from Leonard C. Bruno's 1995 survey of Western technology. Johannes Gutenberg printed this Latin Bible in Mainz around 1454 or 1455 using movable metal type, one of the first major books produced this way in Europe. Notice that the large decorated initials and red headings were not printed. Scribes and illuminators added them by hand after the text was printed, so the pages mix mechanical type with traditional craftsmanship.
