Its title reads like a promise made at the family table: a soldier telling his mother he will read the Bible every day. The lithograph was made to promote the YMCA's Bible study week, held January 5 to 12, probably in 1917 or 1918. During the First World War the Y ran huts, canteens and reading rooms for American troops in camps and overseas, and it encouraged religious reading as a way to keep young men steady far from home. The poster's appeal rests on that domestic bond between a worried mother and a son away at war.
