The 1905 World Series is the setting here, the first Fall Classic played under the best-of-seven format that baseball's two major leagues had agreed to. The New York Giants, managed by John McGraw, met the Philadelphia Athletics, whose pitching staff, led by Chief Bender and Eddie Plank, was among the strongest in the American League. The Giants won in five games, shut out the Athletics in each of the first three contests, and took the title in the Polo Grounds, where the crowds were large for the period. Panoramic views like this one were a popular way to capture such crowds and ballparks in the early 1900s.
