A woman on a Dutch towpath hauls a canal boat along, the act captured in the title "woman drawing canal boat pulling." The Bain News Service, a New York picture agency that sold news and feature photographs in the early twentieth century, made this glass negative, and the caption's details came from its own records, which the Library of Congress notes are unverified. Towing barges by rope from the bank was a long-standing way of moving goods on Dutch waterways, and it was still in use when cameras began recording such scenes for newspapers and travel markets.
