A Curtiss flying boat is the subject of this glass negative, though its title comes from notes the Bain News Service wrote on the negative or caption card and has not been independently verified. Curtiss aircraft, built by the company founded by Glenn Curtiss, were among the early American designs that could take off from and land on water, which made flying boats useful where no airfield existed. The Bain News Service was a New York picture agency active in the early twentieth century that supplied photographs of current events to newspapers. The record gives no date, so the exact year is uncertain, but the picture belongs to a period of rapid experimentation in aviation.
