A half-plate daguerreotype, toned gold, shows the English chemist and physicist Michael Faraday seated in three-quarter view with one hand resting on a table. The image came from Mathew Brady's studio in the years between 1844 and 1860, a period when Faraday's work on electromagnetic induction and electrochemistry had already made him one of the best-known scientists in Britain. The name "Faraday" is scratched on the back of the plate, and the record notes that it passed through the U.S. War College before reaching the Library of Congress in 1920. Portraits like this one are a useful look at how early photography recorded scientific reputations.
