The inscription on the mat sets this portrait apart. Einstein wrote it out for Mrs. Eugenie Meyer as a keepsake of her visit to Caputh, the village near Potsdam where he kept a summer home, on August 15, 1931. Doris Ulmann, an American photographer best known for her portraits of Appalachian residents and of writers and artists, made the platinum print, a process prized for its soft tonal range. The picture was later reproduced in *Eyes of the Nation*, a survey of American visual history.
