A bell watch at the Naval Training School in Newport, Rhode Island, gives this picture its particular subject: the ritual of striking a ship's bell to mark the half-hours of a sailor's shift. Newport was home to a major U.S. Navy training station, where enlisted recruits learned seamanship and the routines of shipboard life. The picture comes from the Bain News Service, a commercial agency whose glass negatives record daily American life in the early twentieth century. The record gives no exact date, and the negative is cracked, a reminder of how fragile these plates were.
