Recruits going through physical drill on the grounds of the Naval Training Station in Newport, Rhode Island, make up this glass negative. The station, established in 1883 on Coasters Harbor Island, trained enlisted sailors in seamanship and physical conditioning, and rows of uniformed men moving in unison were a common way the Navy showed discipline. The National Photo Company, a firm that produced views of American places in the early twentieth century, made the negative, which dates somewhere between 1909 and 1940. Faint streaks across the glass come from deterioration of its original coating.
