Sailors at the Naval Training Station in Newport are shown at gallery practice, a marksmanship drill in which recruits fired small-caliber weapons at a short range. The station occupied Coaster's Harbor Island and trained enlisted men for the Navy. The National Photo Company, which made views of American towns and military sites, probably recorded this scene in the early twentieth century. The glass negative's streaks and blemishes come from deterioration of its coating, not from the scene itself.
