The record identifies this glass negative as a view of W.H. Osgood's house in Newport, Rhode Island, one of the many summer residences that wealthy families built there during the Gilded Age. Newport's grand "cottages," many of them along Bellevue Avenue, were often large stone or shingled mansions set in landscaped grounds, and they were a favorite subject for news photographers. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, whose photographers worked in New York and documented people, buildings and events in the early 20th century. The record does not give a date, so the exact year is unknown, but the negative's format and source place it in that era.
