The title tells the story here: "Cross out slums" is the slogan of this 1941 poster, issued by the Government Printing Office for the United States Housing Authority, the federal agency created in 1937 to finance low-rent public housing. The USHA's campaign against substandard housing used posters like this one to rally support for replacing crowded, unsanitary tenements with new public developments. Its appeal to the public was direct: a bold red X over a slum dwelling, paired with the promise of better homes for working families. Look closely at the lettering and the strong color blocking, which reflect the graphic style of federal poster work in the early 1940s.
