In this stereograph, the title's "Chinese substitute for horse power" is literal: people, not animals, haul a massive stone roller through a street in Nanking, with ropes running from the cylinder to the workers. Rollers like this were used to press and level road surfaces, and the card, dated around 1906, shows how human muscle often took on work that draft animals did elsewhere. The card was issued by the Keystone View Company, which registered its copyright, and its caption tracings also name Chinkiang and Nanking, placing the scene in the Yangtze River region.
