Titled *New England Scenery*, this piece reads more as a regional landscape than a city view, which makes its place on a board of early 1800s Boston images worth a second look. Boston was then the commercial and intellectual center of New England, and the surrounding countryside of farms, hills and coastal inlets drew artists and engravers who produced views of the region for travelers and collectors. Prints of this kind often idealized the land, favoring pastoral calm and orderly fields even as roads, mills and shipping were changing the region quickly. Viewers can learn as much about the era's taste as about the actual places pictured.
