Here the cartoonist turns an apple tree into a diplomatic joke, with the fruit standing in for prizes that seem ready to drop into the hands of whoever can wait. The record ties the drawing to international questions involving Canada and Cuba in the 1890s, a period when Cuba was fighting Spain for independence and Washington was watching closely. Louis Dalrymple, a regular cartoonist for *Puck*, drew it as the cover for the magazine's January 13, 1897 issue. The title, "Patient waiters are no losers," reads as a warning to impatient powers that the ripest prize may come to whoever holds still.
