Thomas Nast turns the apple into a political joke in this Harper's Weekly cartoon from October 5, 1872, titled "The apple of discord at the Geneva tribunal." It borrows the legend of William Tell, whose arrow split an apple on his son's head. The apple stands for the Alabama claims, the American grievance that Britain had not kept its neutrality during the Civil War, when Confederate raiders such as the *Alabama* were built or fitted out in British ports. The arbitration panel met at Geneva that year, and its award to the United States had been announced only weeks before this drawing appeared.
