Few things about this 1868 color lithograph are as direct as its title: "Our Favorite," a cigar made and sold by J.E. Nicholson & Co., dealers in cigars, tobacco and snuff. In the years after the Civil War, cheap color printing made lithographs a major advertising tool, and tobacco firms used them on labels, trade cards and posters to catch the eye of shoppers. Its placement under apples suggests fruit may figure in the design, a common motif in commercial prints of the period.
