The record gives us little beyond the sitter's anonymity: an unidentified man, captured as a daguerreotype in 1844, roughly five years after Louis Daguerre and Nicéphore Niépce's process was publicly announced in France. What sets a plate like this apart is the medium itself. Each daguerreotype is a single, unique image fixed on a polished silver-coated copper sheet, so it can only be seen at the right angle in changing light, and its mirror-like surface reflects the viewer back. Portraits from this period required sitters to hold still for several minutes, which explains the serious expressions common to the era. Without a name or maker's mark, the man himself remains unknown, but his face is a direct record of how early photography first captured ordinary people.
