This engraving closes a guidebook, *Views of Llandudno and its neighbourhood*, published in Chester and Bangor in the 1850s, and it was drawn by J.C. Rowland and engraved by W. Banks. Llandudno, on the north Wales coast, was then growing into a fashionable seaside resort, and publishers issued illustrated volumes like this one to describe the scenery and local people to visitors. Plates of "Welsh costumes" were a familiar feature of such books. Rural Welsh women's dress, with its shawls and tall hats, was often portrayed as a picturesque emblem of the region, so the plate reflects both local custom and the tastes of tourists.
