Few celebrities of the 1880s were pictured as often as Lillie Langtry, the Jersey-born beauty whose London society success and stage career made her famous on both sides of the Atlantic. Here she wears a costume that the subject headings link to geisha dress, reflecting the period's fascination with Japanese style in Europe and America. Tobacco makers such as the American Eagle company issued chromolithographs like this one as premiums, and the note on the back offering a duplicate for 30 cents shows how eagerly collectors sought them.
