Children at play with sailboats fill this color trade card, which was meant to sell Edwin C. Burt's fine shoes rather than to hang on a wall. Printers produced cards like this in large runs around 1881 or 1882, and merchants handed them to customers or slipped them into packages, so many were pasted into scrapbooks and kept at home. Burt's advertising tied his footwear to comfortable, respectable family life through lively scenes of childhood. The card shows how Victorian shoe sellers reached parents by pairing their goods with images of play and leisure.
