A dog dressed in the clothes of a fashionable young man, complete with cane and cigar, gives this lithograph its character. "Swell" was 19th-century slang for a dandy or man about town, and the joke works because the figure behaves like one. Advertisers used lithography to produce bright, inexpensive color prints, and animals acting as people were a popular device for selling wine and tobacco. The print shows how commercial imagery borrowed the manners of leisured men to make a product seem stylish.
