Sheboygan, Wisconsin, is the place this poster names, tying a commercial advertisement to a specific city rather than to a national brand. The Sheboygan Boot & Shoe Company was one of the many footwear makers that gave small Midwestern towns their industrial identity in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when factory-made shoes were replacing much of the custom work done by local cobblers. Posters like this one were typically printed in bold color lithography and hung in shop windows, on store walls, and in trolley cars, so they reached shoppers directly where they bought goods. Looking at it now, the poster shows how manufacturers sold a practical product through color, lettering, and the promise of quality made close to home.
