Ukiyo-e, often translated as "pictures of the floating world," were woodblock prints that portrayed the pleasure quarters, actors, and everyday life of Edo-period Japan. The record dates this example to 1750, a time when the form was still developing, before full multicolor printing became common in the 1760s, so it likely reflects the simpler, fewer-color methods of earlier work. The catalog title calls it a photo print, but the medium is a woodblock print, and that difference is worth keeping in mind when reading it.
