A stereoscopic daguerreotype like this one is a pair of nearly identical plates, made to be seen together through a stereoscope so the street appears to rise in three dimensions. The catalog places the scene in Toulouse, though the title still calls the city unidentified, and a partly legible sign on one building is the clue that a researcher used to make the link. Daguerreotypes of this kind, made in the 1850s, are rare because each plate is a single mirror-like image that cannot be copied. Toulouse, known for its brick buildings, offers a useful way to judge the street's materials and architecture.
