On July 4, 1918, American shipyards launched 95 vessels on a single day, a show of industrial strength that the picture's title calls the "Tidal Wave." The launches came during the buildup of the United States Shipping Board's Emergency Fleet Corporation, which was racing to replace merchant tonnage lost to German submarine attacks. Holding the launches on Independence Day made the event a patriotic spectacle as well as a production milestone. The scene captures how the war effort turned the nation's waterfronts into places of mass construction.
