The surrender of John Burgoyne's army is the event this engraving commemorates, dated October 17, 1777, the day British forces under Burgoyne laid down their arms near Saratoga, New York. Burgoyne had marched south from Canada hoping to split New England from the other colonies, but supply shortages and stiff resistance at Freeman's Farm and Bemis Heights left his army trapped. The defeat is widely regarded as a turning point of the American Revolution, because it convinced France to enter the war as an ally of the Americans. Prints like this one, issued soon after the event, helped spread news of the victory to a public eager for good news.
