The fountain at the Pavilion in Saratoga Springs, New York, stands for the resort's central attraction in the 1840s: its mineral springs, which drew visitors who believed the waters offered health benefits. By the late 1840s the village had grown into one of the most fashionable summer destinations in the country, with hotels, bathhouses, and promenades built around the springs. The record dates the print to about 1849, and it is associated with the Goupil firm, a well-known printmaking and publishing house, though that attribution is unverified. The scene is worth studying for its record of how visitors gathered around the water in a resort setting.
