Here the artist shows the moment British General John Burgoyne's army laid down its arms near Saratoga, New York, on October 17, 1777. The surrender followed a failed attempt to split the colonies by sending troops south from Canada, and it persuaded France to enter the war on the American side. Percy Moran, a Brooklyn painter known for historical scenes, made this composition, and this color halftone reproduction was registered for copyright around 1911 so it could be sold as a popular print.
