From a vantage point near Rock Raymond, this color lithograph presents Manchester, New Hampshire, around 1855, when the city was expanding rapidly along the Merrimack River. J.B. Bachelder, who made many panoramic town views, composed it from his sketches, and the New York firm Endicott & Co. produced the print. Bird's-eye views like this were popular in the mid-19th century because they gave residents and investors a broad picture of streets, mills, and public buildings. Its color and detail make it a useful record of the city's industrial growth in the decade before the Civil War.
