Column Rock sits in the Dixville Notch, a narrow mountain pass in the White Mountains of northern New Hampshire, and its tall, weathered stone face is the feature that sets this view apart from other scenes of the notch. The notch has long drawn travelers and artists because its steep walls and dense forest make the land feel wild even though the nearby village of Dixville is small and quiet. Views like this one were popular with visitors who came to the mountains in the 19th and early 20th centuries, when rail lines and grand hotels brought tourists to the region. Look closely at the layered rock and the way the trees cling to the slopes to see why the notch became such a favorite subject.
