Few spots in New Hampshire combine rock and water quite like the cliffs rising above Dismal Pool, which gives the view its name. Scenes of the White Mountains and their rocky ledges were especially popular in the nineteenth century, when railroads and grand hotels brought summer visitors north to see the mountains for themselves. Pictures like this one reflect that appetite for wild, dramatic scenery and offer a glimpse of how the landscape was seen and valued in that period.
