The Flume is a narrow granite gorge in Franconia Notch State Park, where a stream has cut a channel roughly 800 feet long between sheer walls. The wedged boulder that gives this view its focal point is a large block that lodged between the cliff faces, held in place for centuries above the water. Visitors in the 19th century reached the gorge by boardwalk, which was first built in the 1800s and later rebuilt several times after floods and wear. The site drew artists and tourists alike during the White Mountains' rise as a summer destination, and the wedged rock remains one of the most recognized features of the notch.
