Profile Mountain takes its name from a rock formation on its cliff face, where five granite ledges lined up to look like a man's profile above Franconia Notch. Better known as the Old Man of the Mountain, it drew visitors to the notch for generations and inspired Nathaniel Hawthorne's story "The Great Stone Face." It became a symbol of New Hampshire and appeared on the state quarter. The ledges lost their hold and fell in May 2003, and the profile has been visible only in photographs and memory since.
