Steam billows from the locomotive as it works up a cog track set into the mountainside, a scene typical of the Mount Washington Cog Railway in New Hampshire. The line, which opened in 1869, was among the first railways built to climb a mountain, using a toothed rack rail that engages a gear under the engine so it can manage slopes too steep for ordinary wheels to grip. Its engines burned coal and carried passengers up the peak for sightseeing, a novelty that drew visitors to the White Mountains. The railway still runs today, and its steam trains remain a well-known part of the state's tourism history.
