The steep grade and the smoke trailing behind the engine make this view of a steam cog train on a mountainside easy to recognize. It shows the Mount Washington Cog Railway in New Hampshire's White Mountains, which opened in 1869 and is often cited as one of the first railways built to climb a mountain. Its locomotives grip a toothed rack rail laid between the running rails, a design that let trains climb slopes too steep for ordinary wheels. Sylvester Marsh, a New Hampshire businessman, championed the line despite skeptics who doubted it could be run safely.
