A mother and child stand close together at the edge of the tracks, watching a steam locomotive throw up a long plume of smoke, a scene that would have been routine in New Hampshire towns during the age of railroads. Steam engines of this kind dominated rail travel from the mid-1800s into the early twentieth century, hauling freight from the state's mills and quarries and carrying passengers through its mountain valleys. For many small communities the arrival of a train was the main event of the day, and a picture like this one captures how ordinary residents lived alongside the machinery that connected them to the wider country.
