Elephant's Head is a rock formation at the Gate of Crawford Notch, the narrow pass through the White Mountains that visitors have passed through for generations. Its profile suggests the head of an elephant, and that resemblance made it one of the landmarks travelers pointed out to one another as they entered the notch. Nineteenth-century visitors, who came by stagecoach and later by rail to the grand hotels in the region, often sketched or photographed it as a highlight of the trip. Look at how the rock sits against the steep walls of the pass, which conveys the scale of the notch.
