Few places in New Hampshire carry a story as grim as the Willey Slide in Crawford Notch, where a landslide came down the flank of Mount Willey in August 1826. The slide killed Samuel and Polly Willey, their five children, and two hired men who had fled the house, which the debris split around and left standing. The disaster drew wide attention and helped make the notch a destination for travelers, and Nathaniel Hawthorne later drew on it for his short story "The Ambitious Guest." The site remains a stop for visitors in what is now Crawford Notch State Park.
