Tuckerman Ravine, a steep glacial bowl on the eastern flank of Mount Washington in the White Mountains, is the subject here, seen from the shore of Hermit Lake below it. The ravine is known for holding snow late into spring, which draws skiers and climbers to its headwall long after the lower slopes have turned green. Views like this one, taken from the lake, show how the cirque's walls rise almost sheer above the water and why the spot became a favorite of artists and hikers in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Look closely at the lake in the foreground and the rock walls behind it to see the scale of the basin.
