The ruins shown here are of Catholic churches in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, one of the town's most devastated areas after the flood of May 31, 1889. That day the South Fork Dam, upstream on the Little Conemaugh River, gave way after days of heavy rain, releasing a wall of water that swept through the valley and killed more than 2,000 people. The photograph was issued by Langill & Darling, a New York City firm that sold views of the disaster to a national audience eager to see the scale of the destruction.
