The ruins shown here are of the viaduct that carried the railroad over the Conemaugh River at Johnstown, Pennsylvania, after the flood of May 31, 1889. That morning the South Fork dam upstream gave way, releasing a wall of water that tore through the narrow valley and killed more than 2,000 people. Debris piled against the stone structure, and the jam later caught fire, which made the scene even more devastating. Langill & Darling, a New York City photography firm, issued this view as part of a series documenting the destruction.
