This view shows the ruins left in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, after the flood of May 31, 1889, when the South Fork Dam upstream gave way and a wall of water swept down the Little Conemaugh River into the mill town. More than 2,000 people died, and the destruction was so complete that wreckage piled against the stone bridge at the edge of town. The print was made by Rothengatter & Dillon, a Philadelphia photography firm, and was registered for copyright as an image of the disaster, about ten years after the event. Its date suggests it was sold as a retrospective view of the city's recovery.
