Wreckage piled along the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad line sets this view of Johnstown, Pennsylvania, apart, and the caption's phrase "a ghastly find" points to the grim discoveries made as crews searched the debris. The flood of May 31, 1889, followed the failure of the South Fork dam upstream, and the rush of water through the Conemaugh Valley killed more than 2,000 people. Rothengatter & Dillon documented the aftermath, and their pictures remain some of the most direct records of the destruction.
