Tusks and skulls are the focus of this view of a gallery or museum in Dawson, a Yukon town that was only a few years old when the picture was taken. Dawson grew up quickly after gold was discovered on nearby Bonanza Creek in 1896, drawing prospectors to the Klondike from across North America. Displays like this one reflect the curiosities that travelers and settlers gathered in such frontier towns, where a hall or shop might show natural specimens alongside everyday mining life. The photograph is credited to Wolfe and belongs to the Frank and Frances Carpenter Collection, assembled by a writer and lecturer who showed distant places to American audiences.
